The Existence of God Part One

The Bible is God’s Declaration of Himself

If you were talking with someone and they interrupted you and said, “Please prove your existence to me” how would you feel? Wouldn’t you first be perplexed by the question? After the shock dissipated, somewhat, you then might shake your head incredulously and ask them to clarify themselves, only to get the same question, at which your only reply would be mocking laughter. It’s a ridiculous question.

Why should the same question asked of God be any less ridiculous? The Bible is God’s communication to us. Why must God spend a portion of His communication proving His existence? Doesn’t the fact that He is communicating to us through the medium of the written word prove His existence? The Bible assumes the reality of God since it is His communiqué to mankind.

If you were to write a letter to someone who did not know you, you may begin by stating that the person receiving your letter does not know you, but you would not give him or her a copy of your birth certificate trying to prove you really exist. You would introduce yourself, knowing that your existence is self-evident in the letter written.

Just because you cannot see God does not lessen the reality of His person nor factor in the discussion. The only question that remains, is the Bible the words of God? For a discussion of this question see the Basic Training section, lesson four: Is the Bible God’s Word?
